TECH NEWS: Hands-on with the OEM BlackBerry Passport Leather Flip Case

BlackBerry Passport Leather Flip Case

I've been partial to the Leather Flip cases forBlackBerry 10 devices. I've bought them for every BlackBerry 10 smartphone I've owned except for the BlackBerry Q10. When photos of the BlackBerry Passport flip case emerged, I knew it was a case I wanted to get once I owned a Passport. I finally managed to get my hands on one and I've been putting it through everyday use. Will I be keeping it as my primary case? Read on to find out.

The first thing to note about the Passport Leather Flip Case is that you have to stick it onto your device with an adhesive. Hearing this may already put you off buying one. I understand why BlackBerry have done this. The BlackBerry Passport is a big device in itself and of course adding a case on can make it feel too chunky. So, in order to keep things slim, this is the road BlackBerry seems to have taken.

Applying the case is a bit finicky. Due to the fact you have to stick the case on, you must make sure to align it up as best you can otherwise you'll have a bit ok a wonky case stuck onto your Passport. To get started, wipe down the back of you Passport, then line up the device facedown on the front flip. Once you're happy, peel off the adhesive protection, keep the Passport in place then carefully fold over the back of the flip case onto the back of the Passport. This is where you have to make sure you keep the Passport steady as it does slip out of position. Once you have got it aligned, press and hold down for about 10-15 seconds.

Like all OEM BlackBerry cases, the leather flip case has a sleep magnet. There's a BlackBerry logo embossed on the front and the BlackBerry name embossed on the back. Of course, there's a cut out for the camera on the back. There is a cut out for the earpiece on the front and there is a window for the LED notification light. You can use the case closed when using the phone.

BlackBerry Passport Leather Flip Case Standing

I generally don't mind flip cases. Some people don't like them as they are awkward to use when you flip the case over but I've used one for the BlackBerry Z10 and the Z30 and did fancy the look of the Passport one too. It is a little awkward to quickly glance at notifications when I take it out of my pocket as I have to do it with two hands most of the time. However, that isn't the most negative thing I can say about this case, neither is the fact that you have to stick it on. The biggest niggle I have with the Passport Leather Flip case is that it does not close properly. If I sit it on the table, the front flip lifts up. This will make the screen light up, due to the sleep magnet. If you had it you jacket pocket or bag, this wouldn't be good on your battery is it would constantly open and close. When sitting at the table I end up putting it facedown so it stays shut but then I can't see if a notification has come through as I can't see the LED. It is leather though and over time it will soften and probably co-operate and eventually close. It's just taking a little longer than it did on the Z30 Leather Flip case, which took about 24 hours for me.

For those wondering about the adhesive and how many uses it has. It is said to be good for taking it on and off 1000 times. Removing the case doesn't leave any residue, which is great. I've put the case back on and it still sticks on well. I do recommend keeping the plastic cover for the adhesive to put back on when you're not using the case.

The Good
  • Sleep magnet
  • Genuine leather
  • Can be used closed when on the phone
The Bad
  • Doesn't fully close
  • Case must be stuck onto your device with adhesive
  • A bit awkward to hold when typing
The bottom line

If you're looking for a slim flip case for your Passport, this is as slim as it gets. However, the fact that it needs to be stuck onto your device will mean that deters many people already. Plus it means it will have to be quite a (semi) permanent case, where you won't have instant access to the SIM card slot or memory card slot. The fact that the front flip does not close properly is also something to think about. The BlackBerry Passport Leather Flip Case is unfortunately my least favorite OEM case and find it a little hard to recommend. But I can't fault the quality of it.

If it's still something you're interested in, you can currently order one from Shop CrackBerry. It comes in black or tan. The choice is yours. Please note, there are already some orders on back order but the wait shouldn't be long.
