Pomp as Lagos high school marks 48th anniversary
By Tajudeen Adebanjo

IT was a memorable anniversary marked with the launch of the school magazine and conferment of an excellence award on one of the old students.
Archbishop Aggey Memorial Secondary School, Ilasamaja, Mushin, a suburb of Lagos celebrated its 48th Founder's Day last week. The school's magazine, The Gongs, was launched.

One of its old students and currently chairman of Mushin Local Government, Seye Oladejo, adjudged the Best Local Government Chairman in Lagos State last year, smiled home with an excellence award trophy.

The Principal of the Senior Secondary School, Mrs. Racheal Onayinka gave glory to Almighty God for the courage and strength to shepherd the school to a greater height.

Her words: "My joy knows no bound today, especially when I flash my mind back to the turbulent times the school went through. God, in His infinite mercy, has been so nice to us in the school and we have been growing from strength to strength."

Mrs. Onayinka said the current session has been peaceful and devoid of unrest and violence.

She expressed joy that most of the pupils are no longer wayward. "Many of them have realised the purpose of coming to the school and are now particular about achieving success at the end of their stay in the school," she said.

Mrs Onayinka was not particularly impressed about students' performance in external examinations but assured parents and guardians that things would get better. She said the school management has put in place a mechanism to boost its quest for academic excellence by rewarding outstanding pupils.

Mrs Onayinka, who took over the mantle of leadership eight years ago from Olori Adeolu chided some parents for their lackadaisical attitude towards the academic pursuit of their children.

She said that the school's football team won silver medal last year at the Principal's Cup competition for which it got a cash prize of N750,000. The school also came second in this year's edition of the Spelling Bee Competition at the zonal level.

Attributing the feats to the efforts of the teaching and non-teaching staff, she urged on the state government to employ more teachers to improve efficiency.

The guest speaker, Mr. Elegbeleye attributed the poor performance of students to the influx of foreign films and music, which he said, made them crave Western civilisation.

Elegbeleye, who is the Principal of Atunrase Senior Secondary School, explained that most of the students believe they have come of age to take decisions concerning their lives thus ignoring the advice of their parents.

He sought more efforts by parents and teachers towards re-directing the students to the path of academic excellence and moral standard.

The school was established as a Secondary Modern School in February 1959 under the proprietorship of the Roman Catholic Mission.

In 1968, it became Archbishop Aggey Secondary Commercial School.

When the Lagos State Ministry of Education took over all the schools in 1976, the school became Archbishop Aggey Memorial Secondary School in memory of the proprietor of the school, the most Rev. J. K. Aggey (the then Archbishop of Lagos Diocese) who died at LUTH on March 13, 1972.

The school presented 18 candidates for the West African School certificate students in October 1976. Ten of them passed.

Its old students include Public Transportation Commissioner in Lagos State, Dr. Muiz Banire and Oladejo.
